§1 Overview

The Aeroplane Mosque (locally known as Biman Masjid) and the adjacent Ismail Mansion are among the most architecturally distinctive mid-twentieth-century structures in Dhaka's Elephant Road neighbourhood. Constructed in the late 1940s, the mosque's aeronautical-inspired facade — featuring stylised wing motifs and a streamlined minaret — represents a rare convergence of Art Deco modernism and Islamic vernacular architecture in colonial Bengal. The Ismail Mansion, a residential block sharing the compound, displays comparable decorative craftsmanship and is understood to have been commissioned by the same patron. Together, the structures constitute a coherent heritage ensemble of local, national, and potentially international significance.

This dossier is maintained as a living document. All claims are cross-referenced with primary sources. Findings are subject to revision as new evidence is submitted.
